UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods

Summary

This practice note discusses the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG or Convention). The CISG established uniform rules for the international sale of goods. The CISG applies to all contracts for the sale of goods between parties who have a principal place of business in different countries that have executed the Convention. Its application provides greater stability and certainty in international sales transactions, as there is no need to resort to international law to determine what law applies to the contract, nor do parties have to educate themselves on the various contract laws of different countries in which it may sell its goods. Rather, parties can rely upon a neutral set of rules that will apply to their international sales transactions.
