Summary

This client alert digest discusses the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on Russia and Russia-related entities in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Shortly after Russia's announcement on February 21, 2022, that it would recognize the regions of Ukraine referred to as the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic (Covered Areas) as independent states, the United States imposed comprehensive sanctions on the Covered Areas. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the United States, the European Union, and other countries have imposed additional sanctions on Russia and Russia-related entities. The situation and response remain extremely fluid and additional sanctions are expected to be imposed.
