Summary

This template is a paid sick leave policy (with acknowledgment) that sets forth employees' entitlement to paid sick leave. Employers may include this policy in an employee handbook or distribute it as a standalone policy. It is intended for private employers and includes practical guidance, drafting notes, and alternate and optional clauses. This template's language has been customized to comply with Minnesota and federal law. As a result, it differs from the non-jurisdictional Paid Sick Leave Policy (with Acknowledgment). It also includes requirements for complying with local paid sick leave laws in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The drafting notes, alternate clauses, and optional clauses focus on issues under Minnesota, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and federal law, but also include references to Bloomington's (effective July 1, 2023) safe and sick time ordinance. Duluth’s earned sick and safe time law was repealed effective January 1, 2024. Duluth, Minnesota, Ordinance No. 23-062-O. You may customize this policy to comply with the local ordinances but should first check the local ordinances to determine their specific sick leave requirements. Note, there may be additional municipalities that require employers to offer sick leave to employees. For a non-jurisdictional employee handbook, see Employee Handbook.
