Invitation Letter
(Supporting B-1 Business Visitor Visa or B-1 Admission Application)

Summary

This template is an invitation letter in support of a B-1 Business Visitor Visa or B-1 Admission Application intended to be used by a U.S. company on behalf of a foreign national it has invited to visit the U.S. company for temporary business purposes. It is intended for private employers. This template includes practical guidance and drafting notes. For Canadian citizens, who do not need a visa for B-1 admission, this letter should be submitted to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) immigration officer at a land or air Class A Port of Entry to apply for admission to the United States. For other foreign nationals, this letter should be submitted to either a U.S. Consulate or Embassy's Non-immigrant Visa Section to apply for a B-1 visa in their passports. There is a distinction between an application for a B-1 visa, where required, and an application for a B-1 admission which does not require the prior issuance of a visa stamp in the foreign national's passport. Note also that foreign nationals of Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, and Somalia have restricted travel to the United States under the Presidential Proclamation Enhancing Vetting Capabilities and Processes for Detecting Attempted Entry into the United States by Terrorists or Other Public-Safety Threats (issued Sept. 24, 2017). For more information on the B-1 visa, see Nonimmigrant (Temporary) Worker Visa Classifications: Key Considerations.
