Summary

This template is an invitation letter in support of a B-1 Business Visitor Visa or B-1 Admission Application intended to be used by a U.S. company on behalf of a foreign national it has invited to visit the U.S. company for temporary business purposes. It is intended for private employers. This template includes practical guidance and drafting notes. For Canadian citizens, who do not need a visa for B-1 admission, this letter should be submitted to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) immigration officer at a land or air Class A Port of Entry to apply for admission to the United States. For other foreign nationals, this letter should be submitted to either a U.S. Consulate or Embassy's Non-immigrant Visa Section to apply for a B-1 visa in their passports. There is a distinction between an application for a B-1 visa, where required, and an application for a B-1 admission which does not require the prior issuance of a visa stamp in the foreign national's passport. On December 16, 2025, President Trump issued Proclamation 10998, Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States, which expanded entry restrictions to nationals of 39 countries and those traveling on Palestinian Authority-issued travel documents, effective January 1, 2026. See 90 Fed. Reg. 59717. For a complete list of countries, see Trump Administration Immigration Timeline Summary Tracker. For more information on the B-1 visa, see Nonimmigrant (Temporary) Worker Visa Classifications: Key Considerations.
