This practice note discusses data geolocation and storing of health information in the cloud. More specifically, it defines data geolocation and sets out its importance to understanding Canadian health information privacy laws and explains the inclusion of data geolocation provisions in privacy legislation. It also sets out information with respect to storing and accessing health information from outside of Canada by Canadian healthcare organizations, including where prohibited with exceptions and where permitted with conditions using applicable legislation.
