Comparing Institutional and ad hoc Arbitration
Summary
This Practice Note sets out the key differences between institutional (administered) arbitration and ad hoc (unadministered) arbitration. It covers the commencement of proceedings, appointment of arbitrators, flexibility on procedure and supervision, costs and enforcement. It provides comparisons between rules and practices in two institutions, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) on one hand and ad hoc (sometimes called adhoc or Ad Hoc) arbitration under the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) arbitration rules on the other hand.
