This practice note discusses key definitions in the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956 (BHC Act), the framework for bank holding company (BHC) supervision and regulation, acquisitions and investments in banks and other insured depository institutions (IDIs), nonbanking activities and investments by BHCs, and related procedural and approval requirements. This note does not discuss provisions of the BHC Act related to foreign banking organizations.
