Amending Claims in Bankruptcy

Summary

This practice note discusses amending proofs of claims in bankruptcy proceedings. Unless scheduled as a non-contingent, liquidated claim, a creditor generally needs to file a proof of claim to receive a distribution from the bankruptcy estate. In a Chapter 11 case, the court will set the bar date as the deadline to file claims. Creditors can freely amend claims or file new claims prior to the bar date.
