ALTA Survey Review Checklist

Summary

This checklist provides step-by-step guidance for reviewing an American Land Title Association (ALTA) survey. The checklist may be used by both counsel to a purchaser/borrower in a real estate acquisition and/or financing transaction and counsel to a lender making a loan secured by real estate. ALTA surveys are the most commonly used survey type in acquisition and financing transactions in the United States and this checklist can be used in all 50 states. However, because ALTA surveys are required to comply with state and local law in certain respects, best practice is to consult local counsel when reviewing an ALTA survey.
