Prior to the initial interview, the better practice in most situations is to have the potential client fill out an interview sheet for the purpose of eliciting general information about the client and the reason legal advice is sought. The information obtained will aid counsel, not only in determining whether the case is one within his or her area of practice, but also in subsequently evaluating the per son as a witness if legal representation is undertaken. Should the person decline to answer any questions on the sheet, counsel should not require the person to do so unless the omitted answers are necessary for counsel to determine whether legal representation is necessary, and if so, whether it may be undertaken by counsel.
