    Federal law prohibits discrimination in employment with regard to compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment on the basis of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin [42 U.S.C. § 2000e-2(a)]. It also prohibits the publication of any employment advertisement that indicates a preference for or limitation on a prohibited classification [42 U.S.C. § 2000e-3(b)]. This prohibition does not prohibit an employer from offering different terms of employment on the basis of a bona fide seniority or merit system [42 U.S.C. § 2000e-2(h)]. It also does not prevent hiring on the basis of religion, sex, or national origin where religion, sex, or national origin is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business or enterprise [42 U.S.C. § 2000e-2(e)].
