Wage Garnishment State Law Survey
Summary
This survey summarizes state wage garnishment laws. While there are federal rules concerning wage garnishment (see the Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA)—15 U.S.C. § 1673; 29 C.F.R. pt. 870), states may choose to provide additional wage garnishment limitations. Because some state laws provide more protections to employees, employers must comply with whichever law results in less money being taken from the employee's pay. 29 C.F.R. § 870.51.
