Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act Key Provisions

Summary

This practice note discusses key provisions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (the Dodd-Frank Act or the Act) (111 P.L. 203, 124 Stat. 1376). The Dodd-Frank Act was enacted in July 2010 and hailed as the most comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. securities and financial systems in the history of modern regulation. Passed in response to the economic crisis of 2008 (as well as perceived corporate abuses leading to the crisis), the Act sought reforms in areas as wide-ranging as banking, mortgage loans, derivative instruments, and executive compensation.
