Social Media Public Discourse Policy
(With Guidelines)

Summary

This Social Media Public Discourse Policy template is for use by employers as either a stand-alone policy or as part of an employee handbook or similar collection of workplace policies issued to the employees. This template includes practical guidance, drafting notes, alternate clauses, and optional clauses. A social media policy provides employees with an outline of their employer's requirements and expectations with respect to communications made by employees through online media outlets such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. This type of policy is sometimes included within employer policies concerning the use of employer owned electronic communications equipment, such as computers, telephones, and internet service. However, the template provided here is more general and is not limited to the employees' use of social media only through the employer's equipment.
